Oldsmar's New 24/7 Pet Microchip Scanning Station And a Free Clinic on October 10

Losing a pet is one of the most stressful things a pet owner can go through. Oldsmar just made the reunion a lot more likely to happen - and a lot faster.

Oldsmar Fire Rescue and Pinellas County have teamed up to launch what is believed to be the county's very first public, self-service pet microchip scanning station. Permanently installed outside Fire Station 54 at 225 Pine Ave N, the station is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - no shelter hours, no waiting on animal control, no vet appointment needed.

And to celebrate the launch, the city is hosting a free pet microchip clinic on Saturday, October 10 from 10 AM to noon at Fire Station 54. More on that below.

How the Scanning Station Works

If you find a lost dog or cat, bring it to the station outside Fire Station 54 at any hour. On-site instructions walk you through how to use the universal microchip scanner, how to read the unique identification number it returns, and what steps to take to contact the microchip registry and reach the pet's owner. The whole process can happen in the middle of the night if it needs to - no business hours required.

This matters more than people realize. Research shows that dogs with microchips are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners, while microchipped cats are more than twenty times as likely to be returned to their owners. The gap between a lost pet and a found pet often comes down to whether someone knew where to go and what to do. Now, in Oldsmar, that answer is always the same: Fire Station 54.

A Girl Scout Project Made It Happen

The universal scanner was donated as a Bronze Award project by local Girl Scout Juniors from Troop 31816 of Girl Scouts of West Central Florida. Their project, titled "Helping Lost Pets Get Home Faster," is exactly the kind of community-level thinking the Bronze Award is designed to recognize and reward. These are 4th and 5th grade girls who looked at their community, identified a real gap, and did something about it. That deserves a mention.

Oldsmar Joins a Growing Movement

Oldsmar is not alone in this. Bay County recently introduced pet microchip scanners at fire rescue stations across the county, and Berkeley County, South Carolina launched self-service scanning stations with universal scanners available 24/7 at multiple locations. The model works because fire stations are already trusted community anchors — as one Volusia County official put it, the fire station is the first place people think to go when something is wrong.

Pinellas County formalized its support through an official agreement with the City of Oldsmar, making this a properly backed initiative rather than a one-off donation sitting on a shelf.

If Your Pet Is Not Microchipped Yet

This clinic is a no-cost opportunity to take care of something most pet owners put off. A microchip is a one-time procedure - roughly the size of a grain of rice - that stays with your pet for life. It does not replace a collar and tags, but it does provide a permanent backup that cannot fall off or fade. If your pet ever goes missing and someone finds them, that chip is the fastest path back to you.

The station at Fire Station 54 is there year-round regardless of whether your pet is already chipped. But if they are not, October 10 is the easiest opportunity you will get.
